It was an easy question to answer. Birchbark pointed. âMedea. She should be the next one to bring back.â Even dead and frozen, her expression showed her determination. The woman had fought to the very last.
âShe was beautiful,â Branwyn said, with a trace of envy in her voice.
âShe was,â Birchbark agreed. âAnd she will be again.â
The other two bodies, stored in what had plainly been an underground storeroom, were Danj and Hagen, both seasoned warriors from mountain villages. But Medea would be more useful. There were frost giants in the vicinity, and slaying such creatures was the woman's specialty.
The room they were in was actually where Fern spent most of her time, including sleeping. There was no question in his mind that she had once been human, but now she was a creature of the cold, avoiding warmth and especially fire. The powerful magic used to alter her definitely interested him as a druid. Given time and adequate resources, he might even be able to restore her to human.
âWhen the weather breaks, we will head to the Sixth City.â Branwynâs Kaldiran was heavily accented but understandable. Over the last four days they had each made good progress in learning each otherâs language. Much of it was learning differences in pronunciation and word order, and that was relatively easy.
Birchbark wondered if the weather would ever break. The Great Cold might be gone, but the effects remained. In a way that was good, since it meant that the bodies they were seeking were in no danger of thawing. Still, he wouldnât be satisfied until they had recovered all of them.
His rescuers were an odd assortment. Handsome and muscular, Draymund styled himself an expert dragon-slayer. Celebern relied more on speed and agility than brute force, and he fought with a spear. Milric was a serious and quiet human warrior, and he was in a relationship with Branwyn. Almera, yet another half-elf, was the odd one out. She was younger, only a novice spell-caster, and apparently carrying Draymundâs child.
Albert had been the one to magically transport them from Andoranâs Realm to Yunn. When he departed, he told them he would return âsoon,â but that had been over two months ago. That was disconcerting, but Birchbark had faith that his old friend would eventually fulfill his promise.
Branwyn nodded toward the three bodies. âDo they have children?â
Birchbark pointed at Medea. âShe has a son.â Then he pointed at Danj. âHe has a son and a daughter.â There was also a fourth child, a girl older than the other three. They would probably find all four of them together, frozen solid along with their protectors.
âWe will save them,â she said, making it sound like a vow.
âWe will,â he agreed. And hopefully all of their parents.
The two of them made their way to the small dining area, finding it unoccupied. It was less cold there, but still not exactly warm. Branwyn made them tea before they resumed their language practice.
Since it sounded like he would eventually live there, he asked her questions about Andoranâs Realm and the Witchâs City.
